ABOUT
THE "BIRDS OF SARAWAK: A DIGITAL ANNOTATED CHECKLIST"
This online bird checklist is a
webshare
created through the collaboration between the Institute of Biodiversity
and Environmental Conservation (IBEC), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak and
Malaysia International Multimedia Centre
for E-Community Development (MIMCED).
Checklists of birds of a particular region in Asia have been a popular past time
for many bird watchers. However, information on the distribution or seasonal occurrence of
birds in an area can change over time. Bird checklists often are outdated in only a few
years after printing, but updates are irregular due to prohibitive costs. The Internet
provides a cost effective platform for the compilation and dissemination of current
information on bird distribution.
Here - for the first ever - we offer a rare and exotic bird checklist which
indicate the seasonal occurrence of birds in various nature preserves, and other areas of
special interest in the state of Sarawak, Malaysia.
We hope that the checklist organized through this webshare program will
serve several purposes.
-
Help bird enthusiasts decide where to visit in the state of
Sarawak. We can almost guarantee that a visit to these unique areas can be an exotic and
rewarding experience for both the amateur and expert birdwatcher.
- Provide potential visitors with a guide to birds that might
occur in a particular region of Sarawak during a particular season.
- Prompt and encourage visitors to these areas to help improve
the accuracy and completeness of the checklists. The information in this checklist is the
latest that we have and is more current than the printed versions.

Spotting and
Reporting Rare Birds
|
|
Sightings of birds and other wildlife are an important part of monitoring the
quality of biodiversity and ecological balance in an area. We encourage visitors to share
their observations of rare, peculiar, or occasional birds with us. We have included an address
for visitors to send information on rare birds so that the checklist can be updated. To
assist in establishing standards in observation and reporting, we also provide a Record
Documentation Form to document supporting details of rare bird observations.
The publisher of this webshare gratefully acknowledge the efforts and
dedication of
Dr. Richard Gregory-Smith, a dedicated Australian who has spent many years
of his life traversing the length and breath of the entire state of Sarawak to compile
this rare and invaluable checklist.
We would also like to thank the Institute of Biodiversity and Environmental
Conservation (IBEC) through Professor Dr. Ghazally Ismail who has given
their fullest support in making this project a reality.
We encourage others to make their checklists available on this home page. If you
have a checklist that your organization would like served here, or for further
information, please contact (webmaster):
