Bronchocela Kaup, 1827:

Bronchocela J. J. Kaup. 1827. Isis von Oken: 619. (type species: Agama cristatella Kuhl, 1820, by original designation.)

Derivation: Greek for swollen throat, in allusion to the distinct gular pouch of males.

Remarks: Revived from the synonymy of Calotes Cuvier, “1817” 1816 by Moody (1980), in an unpublished thesis, which has been followed by several authors (e.g., Diong and Lim, 1998; Manthey and Grossmann, 1997: 160).
