Type locality: RMNH 3043-44 (two syntypes; fide Manthey and Denzer, 1992e), from “l’ile de Bornéo”.

Distribution: Endemic to Borneo (Manthey and Grossmann, 1997: 180).

Derivation: Latin implying an inhabitant of Borneo.

Remarks: Gonocephalus borneensis (Schlegel, 1848) was synonymised under Gonocephalus bellii (Duméril and Bibron, 1837) by Smith (1935: 134), but revived as a distinct species by Manthey and Grossmann (1992). The taxon has frequently been misspelt as borneensis (e.g., Boulenger, 1885: 288; De Rooij, 1915: 106; Tanner, 1953; Manthey and Grossmann, 1997: 191).
