Type locality: ZMB 5023 (holotype; fide Denzer, 1997; earlier reported lost fide Inger, 1960; Bauer et al., 1995: 53), from “Pulo Matjan auf Borneo” (= Pulau Matjan, Kalimantan).

Distribution: Endemic to Borneo (Manthey and Grossmann, 1997: 197; Wermuth, 1967: 75).

Derivation: Latin for black-lipped.

Remarks: De Rooij’s (1915) description of Phoxophrys nigrilabris is based on the type series of P. cephalum (see Inger, 1960).
