Cnemaspis kendallii U. Manthey & W. Grossmann. 1997. Amphibien & Reptilien Südostasiens: 212.

Type locality: BMNH XXII.92a (lectotype designation by Dring, 1979), from “Borneo”.

Distribution: The Malay Peninsula, including Pulau Tioman, the Riao and Natuna Archipelagos and north-western Borneo (Manthey and Grossmann, 1997: 213).

Localities in Borneo: SARAWAK: Bako National Park (FMNH 223201; MCZ 157158-59; ZRC 2.4662 [three examples]; Das & Charles, 1993b), Kuching (Brown, 1902; De Rooij, 1915: 26); Matang (BMNH RR 1962.182; 99.12.8.1), Mount Penrissen (De Rooij, 1915: 26); Santubong (De Rooij, 1915: 26; Denzer, 1996); Bidi (BMNH 1902.12.12.12); Bau (BMNH 1911.1.30.7-9); Gunung Gading (Smith, 1925b); Santubong (Das, unpubl., Manthey and Grossmann, 1997: 212); KALIMANTAN: Semitau (De Rooij, 1915: 26); Ranchan Pool forest, Serian (Das, unpubl.). Also, BMNH XXII.92a (holotype), UF 78463, from “Borneo”.

Derivation: The specific name is clearly a patronym, although it is unclear who Kendall was, as Gray’s (1845) work does not mention the name in the list of donors.

Remarks: Dring (1979), who designated the lectotype, found that one of the syntypes of Gray’s (1845) Heteronota Kendallii was, in fact a juvenile Cnemaspis nigridius (Smith, 1925). The records of Cnemaspis kendallii from New Zealand by McCann (1955) was shown to be based on misidentified specimens of Nactus pelagicus (Girard, 1857) by Das and Bauer (1998).
