Derivation:
The specific name is clearly a patronym, although it is unclear who Kendall was,
as Gray’s (1845) work does not mention the name in the list of donors.
Remarks:
Dring (1979), who designated the lectotype, found that one of the syntypes of
Gray’s (1845) Heteronota Kendallii
was, in fact a juvenile Cnemaspis
nigridius (Smith, 1925). The records of Cnemaspis
kendallii from New Zealand by McCann (1955) was shown to be based on
misidentified specimens of Nactus
pelagicus (Girard, 1857) by Das and Bauer (1998).
