Type locality: BMNH 1946.8.22.90 (formerly BMNH 1925.9.1.8; holotype), from “Mt. Gadin” (= Gunung Gading, 01º 44’N; 109º 50’E, Sarawak, East Malaysia; Borneo). Other material that Smith (1925b) looked at but did not formally designate as types include MCZ 39024 and ZRC 2.1114-115.

Distribution: North-western Borneo and Natuna Island. Endemic to Borneo.

Localities in Borneo: SARAWAK: Gunung Gading (Smith, 1925b, based on BMNH 1946.8.22.90; BMNH 1974.3790; MCZ 39024); Lundu (MCZ 15250); Mt. Poi (BMNH 1925.9.1.9-10).

Derivation: Latin for blackish.

Remarks: Since Smith (1925b) designated a ‘type’ of his new species, although his description of the species was based on several specimens (including MCZ 39024 and ZRC 2.1114-115), these do not have the status of types (see Das and Lim, 2001). The Pulau Tioman population referred to this species by Dring (1979) is under study.
