Type locality: BMNH 1946.8.30.83 (holotype), “Agam” (00º 15’S; 100º 05’E, north of Bukittinggi, western Sumatera Province, Indonesia). Type locality erroneously stated to be “Gunong Paring, Java” by Smith (1935: 107), which was followed by Wermuth (1965: 88) and Brown and Alcala (1978: 45); see Kluge (1968).

Distribution: Nicobar Islands in India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Nias, Simalur, Java, Bali, Sumbawa, Komodo, the Philippines Archipelago, New Guinea, New Caledonia, Polynesia, Hawaii and the Mascarene Islands (Manthey and Grossmann, 1997: 240).

Localities in Borneo: SARAWAK: Lambir Hills (Das and Charles, 1993); Naga Tekalit Camp at Mengion River (FMNH 138545; 213665); Labang Camp at Sungei Seran (FMNH 158734); Bako National Park (FMNH 196268);  BRUNEI: Batu Apoi (Das, 1995, based on UBD 13); Tasek Merembun, Bandar Seri Begawan (Das, 1992, based on UBD 03); SABAH: Kiau, Mount Kinabalu (Smith, 1931, based on BMNH 1929.12.22.87; Manthey, 1983); Sandakan (Tan, 1993: 6, based on FMNH 63661-62; BMNH 95.9.11.5), Kota Marudu, Marak Parak (Tan, 1993: 6, based on FMNH 239661); Bundu Tuan, Luidan River, Mount Kinabalu (UMMZ 82949, 127683); Purulon (FMNH 243789).

Derivation: Greek for model or artifice, in allusion to its beauty.

Remarks: A species complex (see Bauer and Das, 1999), whose systematics is being investigated by George Zug (pers. comm., 1998).
