Type locality: BMNH 1946.8.18.82 (formerly BMNH 56.11.17.41) (holotype), "Hong Kong" (22º 15’N; 114º 11’E; in eastern China).

Distribution: Nicobar Islands of India, Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Java, Sulawesi, possibly Sumatra, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, southern and eastern China, the Philippines Archipelago (Manthey and Grossmann, 1997: 275; Welch et al., 1990: 83).

Localities in Borneo: SARAWAK: Kuching (De Rooij, 1915: 265; Smith, 1925b); Upper Rejang River (De Rooij, 1915: 265); BRUNEI: Gadong, Bandar Seri Begawan (UBD 02-04, 239, 531, 607); Jalan Manggis Dua, Bandar Seri Begawan (UBD 554); Brunei Museum compound (BM 93/10); LABUAN: Labuan (De Rooij, 1915: 265, based on BMNH 94.6.30.23); SABAH: Bukit Padang (Matsui et al., 1985); Gaya Island, Kota Kinabalu (De Rooij, 1915: 265; Matsui et al., 1985); Tambunan (UMS 5882); Sabah Museum Campus, Kota Kinabalu (SSM 681); UKMS campus, Kota Kinabalu (UKMS [at present UMS] Re. 167 and 239); Gaya Island (BMNH 97.12.28.19). Also, “Sarawak” (BMNH 97.6.1.3-4).

Derivation: For John Charles Bowring (1821-1893), who presented the type to the BMNH (see Troyer, 1982, for a biography).
