Type locality: CAS 85664 (holotype), from “..northeast of San Jose, Mindoro Island” (12º 25’N; 121º 03’E, the Philippines); CAS 85663, 85665-68, CAS-SU 12233-35, 28085-89, 28091, 28093, 28105-06, 28115-16, 28118, 28121, 25845-46, 25849-54 (paratypes), from “Mindoro Island” (in the Philippines).

Distribution: The Philippines (Mindoro, Caluya, Negros, Cebu, Leyte, Camiguin, Sámar, Mindanao and Palawan) and Sabah in north-eastern Borneo (Welch et al., 1990: 86).

Localities in Borneo: SABAH: Kota Kinabalu (Hikida and Ota, 1987); Sungai Purulon, Crocker Range (SP 243795); Bukit Padang, Kota Kinabalu (Mocquard, 1890; De Rooij, 1915: 161; Matsui et al., 1985; as Mabuya multicarinata [Gray, 1845]); Kiau, Mount Kinabalu (BMNH 1929.12.22.94; 1974.3845; MCZ 43499-500; UMMZ 82934; ZRC 2.1654 and 2.1830-38); Kenokok, Mount Kinabalu (UMMZ 82935-36); Lobong, Mount Kinabalu (BMNH 1929.12.22.95).

Derivation: Latin for cryptic, for being confused with Mabuya multicarinata (Gray, 1845).

Remarks: Bornean specimens were assigned in the original description to this species by Brown and Alcala (1980: 122-123) based on lamellar counts of specimens in the BMNH (1929.12.22.94-95; 1974.3840).
