Type
locality: MNHN 1983 is indicated as the type by Thireau et al. (1998). Type
locality was not mentioned in original description of H. Kuhl (1820), and was
restricted to “Java” (also spelt Jawa, Greater Sundas, Indonesia) by Pope
(1935: 480).
Distribution:
North-eastern India and Nicobar Islands, Myanmar, southern China, Thailand, the
Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, Bali and the Philippines Archipealgo
(Manthey and Grossmann, 1997: 272; Welch et al., 1990: 88).

Derivation:
Latin for many-banded, in allusion to the many dark bands on the body.
