Current Status of Marine Turtle Conservation in Peninsular Malaysia

K. Ibrahim, K.H.W. Phang, and A.R. Kassim

The earliest conservation measure to control and protect marine turtles was introduced in 1932 in one of the States on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Since then, a number of similar legislative and non-legislative efforts were introduced at both the state and the federal levels to conserve these endangered marine reptiles. However, such efforts seem unable to restrain the rapid decline of all four species of marine turtles found in the Peninsula. This report attempts to update the population status and the various conservation initiatives undertaken in the Peninsula during a period after the first ASEAN symposium-workshop on marine turtle conservation held in Manila, Philippines in 1993.
