SEA TURTLES CONSERVATION ISSUES, NESTING BEACH OWNERSHIP AND THE CONFLICT AT NARIKEL JINJIRA (ST. MARTIN'S ISLAND), BANGLADESH

Saiful Alam Paiker

SEA-NJ, Bangladesh

Narikel Jinjira (St. Martin's Island) is a private island and one of the major sea turtle nesting site among the 12 identified nesting site in Bangladesh. This island is in relative isolation from the mainland and the community is very poor. Their economy is based on seasonal fishing in the bay which is limited to 7-8 month in a year. This island remains inaccessible during the monsoon and that is one of the major reason that no NGOs are working there until 1996. Government activities are also insignificant comparing the mainland. The island people established their own organization for the conservation of the island and natural resources in 1996 and started sea turtle conservation activities by collecting subscriptions from the tourist. The year the island people started their sea turtle conservation activities, same year one research farm from Dhaka went to the island to study the biology of sea turtles. They ended up in conflict with the nesting beach owners and handed over the project in 1998-99 to another research organization. Both the organization failed to establish good contact with the community and their organization and finally they had to quit from the island with out transferring technology.
